On the occasion of Democracy Day, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, made a special visit on Monday to pay respects to the gravesite of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Representing the governor during this visit was the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, who laid a wreath at Abiola’s gravesite located in his Ikeja residence.

A statement released on Monday included reflections from one of Abiola’s children, Ayo Abiola, who fondly remembered the bustling atmosphere of their home while growing up. She recalled how the late businessman and politician’s residence was always filled with a crowd, particularly when he was in town. Ayo Abiola emphasized that her father consistently addressed the concerns of those who sought his assistance, doing his best to help them according to his abilities.

“She hoped and prayed that the present administration would hold on to and work in line with the principles of June 12.” the statement said.

In the meantime, prior to his visit to MKO Abiola’s gravesite, Governor Sanwo-Olu conveyed his congratulations to the people of Lagos and Nigerians as a whole on the momentous occasion of the 30th anniversary of June 12, 1993. This significant date in Nigerian history was commemorated at the National Democracy Day celebration, which took place at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Lagos.

During the event, the governor’s deputy represented him and delivered a message on his behalf. Governor Sanwo-Olu characterized June 12 as a pivotal moment, a watershed, and a turning point in the political trajectory of Nigeria. This date holds immense importance in the nation’s journey towards democracy and represents the resilience and unwavering spirit of the Nigerian people.

“It was a day Nigerians set aside their multi-ethnic and multi-religious colourations and, united by their common desire to see the end of military dictatorship, voted overwhelmingly for the ticket of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe (both Muslims) as President and Vice President on the platform of the Social Democratic Party.”

Sanwo-Olu saluted Nigerians who “sacrificed their lives” in the struggle.

He added that the election of President Bola Tinubu “reignited the spirit of June 12, 1993” and urged Nigerians to remain steadfast and united as “one great people with common destiny.”
