Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has expressed his support for the plan to relocate several departments and units of the bank from Abuja to Lagos.

He believes that this move is the right decision and does not carry any political implications.

While some critics have raised concerns about the CBN’s announcement, particularly from northern leaders who believe it could have political consequences, Sanusi released a statement stating that the relocation is a sensible move.

He suggested that certain functions, such as FSS and most of Operations, should be moved to Lagos, allowing the two Deputy Governors to primarily operate from there. However, he mentioned that economic policy, corporate services, and departments reporting directly to the Governor should remain in Abuja.

Sanusi dismissed the opposition to the policy as unnecessary and pointed out that the CBN already has staff working in branches and cash offices across the country. He emphasized that streamlining operations, increasing effectiveness, and reducing costs are normal management prerogatives.

Regarding the relocation of staff, Sanusi recommended considering individual situations and prioritizing those who may face challenges with the move, such as young mothers with children in school or those with medical conditions.

He advised the CBN not to yield to political pressure and emphasized the importance of pushing through tough decisions. Sanusi urged the Governor to proceed with the policy, ignoring the noise from politicians who may view the relocation as a regional issue. He reminded the CBN to rise above such pressures and focus on doing what needs to be done, even if it means making unpopular decisions.
