Dr. Surajo Abdullahi Shinkafi, the Rector of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic in Talata Mafara, Zamfara State, expressed his concerns about the deteriorating state of facilities in the institution and emphasized that past administrations have neglected the school.

Shinkafi appealed to Governor Dauda Lawal to intervene and rescue the polytechnic by prioritizing infrastructure development and human resource enhancement.

The Rector made these remarks during a visit by the Zamfara State Government’s visitation panel to the institution on Thursday.

He highlighted the severe shortage of qualified human capital, which has negatively impacted the institution. Shinkafi stated that despite the polytechnic’s notable contributions, including producing three governors, engineers, politicians, and business icons within and beyond the state, it lacks sufficient infrastructure and human resources.

Shinkafi further explained that the institution has experienced a significant loss of staff due to poor remuneration, welfare, and the dilapidated state of structures. He emphasized the urgent need for additional manpower in all departments and units of the institution.

Regarding the security unit, the Rector revealed that the polytechnic only has 11 permanent staff members and has had to engage casual staff to improve security on campus.

Shinkafi also lamented the unfortunate loss of 21 staff members, including the former Registrar, Mallam Ibrahim Jafar.

Highlighting the numerous challenges faced by Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, the Rector emphasized the need for financial autonomy to address the institution’s vertical and horizontal issues.

In response, Professor Jafaru Abubakar-Sadiq, Chairman of the visitation panel, assured the Rector that the committee was established to assess the condition of the institution and propose necessary upgrades to its structures and capacity.

He reiterated the committee’s commitment to supporting the government’s efforts in enhancing the quality of education in the state, emphasizing that their visit was aimed at gathering factual information about the institution.
