The National Commission for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) has disclosed that out of the estimated 35.1 million people currently living with disabilities in Nigeria, only 4,500 individuals are officially registered.

James Lalu, the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, made this revelation during a one-day program held in Kano for the issuance of permanent certificates to persons living with disabilities in the North-West region. The event aimed to create awareness among PWDs about the benefits of obtaining certification.

Lalu explained that the program aligned with Section 28 of the Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities Act. Under this law, PWDs can acquire a permanent certificate from the Commission, while medical doctors issue temporary certifications for individuals unable to use a specific body part.

Aside from serving as a form of identification, possessing the certificate is now a legal requirement for seeking remedies in court, as outlined in the Act.

Lalu encouraged all Nigerians living with disabilities to obtain the certificates to fully access the benefits provided. He emphasized that only PWDs with valid certificates would be eligible to receive and seek treatments as stated in the Disability Act.

The NCPWD head also urged the public to consult the Commission for proper guidance regarding the construction of accessible structures.
