The Leprosy Mission, Nigeria (TLMN) in Niger State, has called upon Nigerians to stop stigmatising leprosy victims, emphasizing that showing compassion is crucial for their faster healing.

Habila Daniel Diko, the Community Relations Officer of TLMN and Coordinator of TLMN Volunteers in Niger State, made this appeal during a sanitation exercise conducted by volunteers at the Leprosarium in Minna on Saturday.

Diko explained that the exercise was part of TLMN’s activities to provide patients with free medical attention, three meals daily, and prosthetic limbs for those who have undergone amputations.

Reflecting on the theme of this year’s World Leprosy Day, ‘Beat Leprosy,’ he underscored its objective of eliminating the stigma associated with leprosy and promoting the dignity of individuals affected by the disease.

“While leprosy is less contagious, it still exists, and even young children are affected by it,” Diko stated. “I envision a society in which leprosy is no longer a source of stigma but an opportunity to demonstrate compassion and respect for all individuals.”

Diko also revealed that children of leprosy patients residing in the community receive scholarships along with full learning materials. Additionally, for those who have been cured and wish to return home, TLMN provides support in the form of low-cost apartments and financial assistance to start small businesses, enabling them to become self-sufficient.

Mrs. Larai Ezekiel, Secretary of the TLMN Volunteers, highlighted the need for interventions and support from well-meaning Nigerians for patients at the Leprosarium, emphasizing that the patients come from various states across Nigeria, not just Niger State.

World Leprosy Day is observed internationally every year on the last Sunday of January to raise public awareness about leprosy, also known as Hansen’s Disease.
