Nigerians Express Concern Over Bassey’s Meeting with President Tinubu
Nigerian footballer Calvin Bassey, a Super Eagles defender, recently stirred controversy by sharing a photo alongside President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, where they were honoured with plots of land and the Member of the Order of Niger (MON) accolade for their achievements in the AFCON 2023.
The X-posted image portrayed Bassey expressing gratitude for meeting Nigeria’s head of state. However, what started as a proud moment for Bassey triggered mixed reactions on social media.
Bassey’s caption, “An honour to meet the Nigerian President,” faced criticism, with some fans questioning his political awareness and advising caution about close associations with the President due to his reputation.
Despite the online backlash, Bassey’s noteworthy performances for the Super Eagles during AFCON 2023 earned him recognition. Alongside his teammates, Bassey played a crucial role in reaching the tournament finals in Ivory Coast, showcasing his talent and commitment on the international stage.
The 24-year-old defender is set to return for the Hammers in the Premier League on February 17, hosting Aston Villa at Craven Cottage.
