The Niger State House of Assembly has called on the state government to establish a special hospital for the treatment and care of victims affected by banditry and kidnapping incidents.

This resolution was passed during a legislative session where Mr. Haruna Duza, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing Munya constituency, presented a motion on the matter.

In his presentation, Mr. Duza highlighted the significant psychological and mental trauma experienced by victims of banditry and kidnapping due to the violence and horrors they endure. He expressed concern about the lasting impact on victims even after they are freed, as many continue to live in fear and struggle to reintegrate into normal life.

The members of the House recognized the urgent need to address the plight of these victims and therefore passed the resolution, urging the state government to establish a dedicated hospital that can provide the specialized care and support necessary for their recovery and rehabilitation.

Duza said:” Aside from giving them swift medical attention, they need professional counselling in a secure environment to help them overcome the trauma.

“There is a need to have a dedicated hospital centralised within the state capital that will give special attention to victims of banditry and kidnapping.”

During his contribution to the discussion, Mohammed Idris (Tafa, APC) recounted his personal ordeal as a victim of banditry, highlighting the traumatic experience he endured following his abduction in 2021.

Appealing to his colleague, he stated: “Let us give the motion the desired attention and focus on the need for the executive to designate a special unit in the state to give special attention to victims of bandits and kidnappings.”
