The Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), Haliru Nababa, has refuted allegations of forcefully removing Mr. Godwin Emefiele, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, from their custody.

Nababa stated that both the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had not made any attempt to extract Emefiele against his will.

He made these remarks during his appearance before the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions in Abuja on Thursday. The committee was addressing a petition submitted by the Centre for Social Justice, Equity, and Transparency.

However, the committee chairman, Rep Mike Etaba, dismissed the petition, citing its subjudice nature. He stated that since the matter was already in court, the committee could not proceed with it and consequently dismissed the case.

Sylvanus Tahir, SAN, the Director of the Legal and Prosecution Department of the EFCC, also considered it inappropriate to entertain the petition due to its connection to an ongoing court case.

Nababa, represented by Assistant Controller-General Nwakeze Emmanuel, asserted that no attempted abduction of Emefiele had occurred. He stated, “As far as we are concerned, we are not aware of any alleged attempt to forcefully release Emefiele, as he is still in our custody, bubbling.”

Tahir, the EFCC’s legal representative, previously mentioned, “The petition we pursued is related to a pending court case. There is an ongoing criminal charge against Emefiele, on whose behalf the petitioners have filed.”
