The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has taken action in response to the worsening power supply in the regions served by Abuja and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Companies. He has summoned the chief executives of these companies, along with the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Sule Abdulazeez.

A letter, signed by the Director of Distribution Services at the Federal Ministry of Power, B.U Mustapha, has requested the attendance of the CEOs of the Discos and TCN at a meeting scheduled for the coming week.

Since the beginning of the year, the power supply situation across the country has been deteriorating. Industry experts attribute this to the significant debt of over $1 billion owed to gas producers, resulting in a shortage of fuel needed to operate thermal gas-fired power plants.

The purpose of the meeting is to address the issues surrounding the worsening electricity supply and find sustainable solutions. The Minister’s Special Adviser, Bolaji Tunji, emphasized that the management of other non-performing distribution companies may also face scrutiny as reports continue to emerge about the power situation in their respective regions.

Tunji stated, “Despite improved supply from TCN, these two distribution companies have been summoned due to the worsening power supply situation in their regions.” He further highlighted that the Ministry is committed to ensuring improved performance from power-generating companies, which has led to an increase in generation capacity to over 4,000 megawatts.
