Lawmaker Criticizes President Buhari for Nnamdi Kanu Remarks, Urges Full Disclosure

Obi Aguocha, a member of the House of Representatives representing Umuahia North/Umuahia South/Ikwuano Federal Constituency in Abia State, has strongly condemned former President Muhammadu Buhari for contemplating the elimination of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Buhari’s thoughts regarding Nnamdi Kanu were revealed in a new book written by his former aide, Femi Adesina. In the book, Adesina quoted the former President as saying that bringing Kanu back to Nigeria to face trial was seen as a favor.

In a statement released in Abuja on Monday, Aguocha expressed deep concern over Buhari’s remarks regarding the handling of Kanu. The lawmaker highlighted that suggesting the elimination of a citizen, even in retrospect, is alarming and raises serious questions about the commitment to the rule of law and human rights.

Aguocha emphasized that the suggestion of “elimination” as a viable option undermines the principles of justice and due process. He pointed out that the recent judgement by the Supreme Court of Nigeria strongly condemned the government under Buhari for the attack on Kanu’s home and his rendition from Kenya.

The lawmaker criticized Buhari for claiming that subjecting Kanu to such illegality was a favor, describing it as a reckless statement that reflects personal vendetta and falls far short of the high standards of civility expected from a leader.

Aguocha called on President Buhari to come forward and confess all the actions he took against Nnamdi Kanu and the South East during his time in office. He emphasized that nobody, including Femi Adesina and Buhari himself, should assume the role of playing God in the case of Nnamdi Kanu. The lawmaker expressed his concern that the former president’s obsession with seeing Kanu in detention stems from his own prejudice.
