The Kebbi State Government has announced its intention to establish a commission dedicated to addressing the needs and promoting the welfare of persons with disabilities, aiming to ensure inclusive governance in the state.

Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, revealed this development in Birnin Kebbi after the State Executive Council meeting, which was chaired by Governor Nasir Idris.

During the meeting, the decision to establish the commission was made, and the council subsequently forwarded the bill to the legislature for further consideration.

According to Ahmed, the impetus for establishing the commission came from a BBC Hausa program called “A Fada a Cika” on January 1. During the program, individuals with disabilities directly expressed their concerns to the governor. They highlighted that many states across the country had already established such commissions, as it was a national matter approved by the National Assembly. They pointed out that Kebbi State was one of the few states yet to establish the commission.

In response to the concerns raised during the program, Governor Idris instructed the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of the state to promptly draft the bill. The bill was then presented during the council’s meeting for further review and subsequent transmission to the Kebbi State House of Assembly for approval.

The commissioner emphasized the governor’s commitment to swiftly ratifying the bill once it has been passed by the Kebbi State House of Assembly.

Furthermore, Ahmed announced that Governor Idris has granted approval for the annual Regatta Cultural Festival of Yauri Emirate, scheduled to take place from February 7 to 10.
