In Kano, hundreds of students gathered on Monday to stage a protest against the ongoing abduction of female students in tertiary institutions across Northern Nigeria.

The students marched through the Rijiyar Zaki area of the city, demanding the immediate rescue of female students who were kidnapped by armed bandits from Federal University Gusau (FUGUS) three months ago, as well as those abducted from Federal University, Dutsinma (FUDMA), and Nasarawa State University, Keffi, in Nasarawa State.

Currently, 24 female students from FUGUS and four female students from FUDMA, who were taken captive by bandits over three months ago, are still being held.

However, there was some positive news as seven students from the Federal University, Lafia (FULAFIA), Nasarawa State, who were abducted four days ago by bandits, were released on Sunday. Unfortunately, the four students who were seized from Nasarawa State University months ago remain in captivity.

The protest was organized under the banner of ‘Arewa Mufarka,’ which translates to ‘Northerners, let’s wake up.’

Sharfuddeen Bature, the convener of the protest, spoke to journalists in Kano and expressed their concerns, saying, “We have been following this matter for a long time. It has been eighty days since the abduction took place. We have ministers in our region, in Zamfara. We have a National Security Adviser (NSA) from our region. We need these girls back. Their parents are in a dire state. We will not stop until our girls are brought back.”

The protesters also condemned the recent killing of over 100 civilians by Nigerian Army drones in the Tudun Biri community of Igabi Local Government Area in Kaduna State.
