Kano APC Requests Tribunal’s Directive to Examine Governorship Election Materials

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano has taken the step of filing an application before the governorship election petition tribunal on Thursday.

The application seeks permission to inspect the electoral materials used during the elections that took place on March 18, 2023 in the state. The party had previously submitted a petition to the tribunal, requesting the overturning of Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf’s victory from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the invalidation of his certificate of return issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

During the pre-trial hearing, the petitioner’s counsel, Nureini Jimoh SAN, informed the tribunal about the filed application, emphasizing the need to inspect the election materials. Jimoh urged the tribunal to grant access to the Biomodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS), ballot papers, voter registration, and other electoral facilities that INEC had deployed throughout the state for the gubernatorial poll.

In response to the application, INEC’s counsel, K.C Wisdom, confirmed receipt of the process but requested the seven-day provision to study the application before providing a response.

However, the counsels representing Governor Yusuf (second respondent), Chief Adegboyega Awomolo SAN, and NNPP (third respondent), E. An Oshayomi SAN, did not object to the petitioner’s application.

The tribunal, presided over by a three-man panel, adjourned the proceedings until June 15, 2023, to continue the pre-hearing on the admissibility of documents from all parties and the adoption of schedules of proceedings.
