According to a report by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Kano and Jigawa states have emerged as the top states in tobacco smoking prevalence in Nigeria.

During a one-day multi-stakeholders’ engagement on tobacco taxation in Jigawa State, organized by CISLAC with support from the Tax Justice Network, Solomon Adoga, a senior programs officer at CISLAC, revealed this information. The primary objective of the engagement was to address the high level of tobacco use in the state, particularly among the youth population.

Adoga expressed concern over the research findings, stating, “It is unfortunate that studies indicate Kano and Jigawa are at the top of the list in terms of tobacco usage in Nigeria, with a significant number of users being youths, some even underage.”

In order to curb tobacco consumption and its associated risks, Adoga emphasized the importance of the state government adopting and implementing the National Tobacco Control Act (2015) and Tobacco Tax Policy. Such measures are crucial for safeguarding the lives of the youth, who represent the future leaders of the nation.

Engaging with key stakeholders including traditional and religious leaders, youth groups, civil society organizations, and the media, the aim is to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and advocate for the adoption and implementation of these laws by both the legislature and the executive.

Addressing the issue of high tobacco smoking rates is vital for protecting the health and well-being of the younger generation and creating a healthier society overall.
