Jack Smith Biography

John L. “Jack” Smith is an American attorney who has worked for the Department of Justice (DOJ) of the United States of America in a number of capacities, including as an assistant United States Attorney, as the acting United States Attorney, and as the head of the department’s Public Integrity Section. In addition to that, he served as the head prosecutor for the International Criminal Court in case involving war crimes committed during the Kosovo War. Smith was appointed to the role of an independent special counsel by US Attorney General Merrick Garland in November of 2022. He will be in charge of supervising two ongoing criminal investigations into former President Donald Trump being conducted by the Department of Justice (DOJ). One of these investigations is looking into whether or not Trump had a role in the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, and the other is looking into whether or not Trump improperly handled classified documents.

Early life and career

Clay, New York is a suburb of Syracuse, and that is where Smith spent his childhood. In 1987, he received his high school diploma from Liverpool High. In 1994, he graduated from Harvard Law School with a Juris Doctor degree and received his Bachelor of Arts degree with highest honors from the State University of New York at Oneonta. After completing his education, he took a position in the office of the District Attorney for the County of New York, where he worked as an Assistant District Attorney and was a member of the Sex Crimes and Domestic Violence Units of the office.

After that, Smith took a position as an assistant United States attorney in Brooklyn. There, he was responsible for bringing charges against the police officers who had sodomized Abner Louima and for securing the death penalty for Ronell Wilson, who had been convicted of killing two members of the New York City Police Department. He worked for the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court from 2008 until 2010, during which time he was responsible for overseeing investigations into war crimes. [6] In the year 2010, Smith was promoted to the position of Chief of the Public Integrity Section at the United States Department of Justice (PIS). He served as the head of the PIS for a period of five years, during which time he was responsible for the prosecution of individuals such as Governor Bob McDonnell of Virginia, Representative Rick Renzi of the United States, New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, and Jeffrey Sterling, a CIA agent who leaked national secrets.

Smith was appointed to the position of assistant United States Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee in the year 2015.
In March of 2017, he took over for David Rivera as the acting United States Attorney. He resigned from that position effective September 2017, after Donald Q. Cochran was nominated for the position. In 2017, Smith was promoted to the position of vice president of Hospital Corporation of America and head of its litigation department.

Smith was appointed to serve as the chief prosecutor for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague on May 7, 2018, for a period of four years. These chambers investigate allegations of war crimes committed during the Kosovo War, including the case of Salih Mustafa. On September 11th, 2018, he began his tenure in the position, and on May 8th, 2022, he was reappointed for a second term.

United States special counsel

Smith was appointed special counsel on November 18, 2022, by United States Attorney General Merrick Garland. Smith was given the responsibility of leading the criminal investigations into the actions taken by Donald Trump in relation to the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, as well as Trump’s handling and storage of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. This appointment was made public on November 18, 2022.
