The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has accused the military of invading Igbomotoru 2 in Bomo-Ibe Clan of Bayelsa State, alleging that the incident resulted in the tragic loss of 40 lives. This accusation comes in the wake of recent killings of military personnel in Okuama Community, Delta State.

In a statement issued by Dr. Alaye Theophilus, the President of IYC, the council condemned the killing of military personnel and clarified that Okuama is not a community in Bayelsa State. The IYC emphasized that the incident did not occur in Ijaw land and has no connection to the Ijaw nation.

To seek justice and uncover the truth behind the matter, the council has established an investigation and fact-finding team. They are willing to collaborate with the military and other security agencies to ensure that the culprits are identified and held accountable under the law.

While urging authorities to apprehend those responsible, the IYC pleaded for the entire community not to be punished for the actions of a few individuals. They expressed their condemnation of the killing of military personnel, describing it as a heinous and inhumane act that should not be supported in any way.

As the largest ethnic group in the Niger Delta region, the IYC emphasized their concern for the stability and business-friendly environment of the oil-rich region. They stated that any incidents occurring in any part of the region are of serious concern to them.

The council also highlighted their observations that when an individual commits an offense against military personnel operating in the region, the military often responds with reprisals against the entire community. They expressed alarm over the complete destruction of Okuama Community and the displacement of its residents, who are now seeking refuge in neighboring communities.

Drawing attention to the ongoing onslaught in Igbomotoru 2 community in Bayelsa State, the IYC reported that the military invaded the community, indiscriminately firing upon innocent men, women, and children. They claimed that over 40 people have been killed so far, and the situation is dire, with the community being held hostage and cut off from external assistance, leading to starvation.

The IYC called upon President Bola Tinubu and the Chief of Defence Staff to intervene and instruct the military to cease their actions in the affected communities.
