Why is Hansel Marantan Trending?

The Philippine National Police announced on Monday that an appeals board’s decision would allow Superintendent Hansel Marantan, who was the main suspect in a 2013 incident known as the “rubout” that resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals, to return to his position as a police officer.

Marantan was in charge of a checkpoint operation at the time, and the officers involved were dismissed from the military the following year after being found guilty of significant job irregularities. Recently, Marantan’s request to have his case heard by the National Police Commission was granted, and the commission issued an order to reinstate him and his 12 colleagues.

However, Director General Ronald Dela Rosa, the head of the Philippine National Police, said that he did not agree to take Marantan back and that the decision was the result of an appeals process. Marantan, on the other hand, believes that the operation against Siman was appropriate.

Marantan and his co-defendants were permitted to post a $300,000 bond earlier this year by the court.
