During a lecture titled “Illegal Migration: The Nigerian Plight” organized by the Department of Mass Communication at Dominican University in Samonda, Ibadan, Segun Adegoke, the former Assistant Controller General of Immigration (Retd.), emphasized the importance of Nigerians, particularly youths, demanding responsible leadership in government and having the courage to resist corrupt leadership.

Adegoke expressed his views in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, highlighting that all levels of government should implement strategies to combat illegal migration and rebuild the confidence and trust of Nigerian youths in their own country.

Adegoke expressed his views in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, highlighting that all levels of government should implement strategies to combat illegal migration and rebuild the confidence and trust of Nigerian youths in their own country.

The former ACG of immigration said, “Government at all levels must design economic policies that will ensure economic and social wellbeing of Nigerian citizens. Nigerian citizens must demand responsible leadership in government and display uncanny courage to resist corrupt leadership. 

“The educational sector should be strengthened to include entrepreneurship for all-round education to ensure that graduates of our institutions are well equipped to take up entrepreneurship. 

“The issue of irregular immigration has become a global concern. But then, in our present situation, the institutional framework has been established to counter emerging security challenges. Hence, there is a need for more synergy among security agencies to work as a team.

“To resolve the issues of brain drain, the government should increase the production capacity, so that even when these foreign countries recruit Nigerian doctors, nurses, and other health workers, it will be an added advantage to our country,” he urged. 

Andu Okwilagwe, the Head of the Mass Communication Department, reiterated the need for the Federal Government to explore alternative means of encouraging youth travel abroad in a legal and safer manner, rather than resorting to dangerous routes like crossing the desert and the Mediterranean Sea.

He said, “The government should find a way for the youths to move to other places. Nigerians hardly stay in any person’s place. They will go there to learn, work and go back home to show off that they have made it. In fact, Nigerians are unique human beings.” 

Prominent figures present at the event were Mohammed Umar, the state Controller of Immigration, and Hyginus Ekwuazi, the Vice Chancellor of the institution.
