The Oladele Fajemirokun Foundation has empowered approximately 1,000 young single mothers with vocational skills in the Ibeju-Lekki local government area of Lagos State.

Recognising the challenges faced by these women who lack male support in their households, the foundation provided them with relevant skills, resources, and support to enhance their economic independence and self-sufficiency.

Kene Egbue, the Foundation’s Program Manager, announced this initiative in a statement, highlighting that it expands on the organisation’s Sustainable Malnutrition Intervention Program (SMALINT) for malnourished children.

The program has received significant acclaim from local residents and community leaders, as it addresses the long-standing poverty and limited opportunities faced by women in the Ibeju Lekki area.

Egbue emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment for sustainable development and breaking the cycle of poverty. By equipping them with essential tools and support, the foundation aims to help these women create better lives for themselves and their families.

The empowerment program includes various activities focused on imparting practical skills and knowledge to the participants. They received training in fields such as hairdressing, tailoring, catering, ICT skills, and leadership development.

The primary goal of the program is to enable women to generate income and achieve economic self-sufficiency. Through workshops and hands-on training at the vocational center in Orimedu, the participants have learned how to establish and manage small businesses, creating sustainable livelihoods.

Mrs. Ofem Favour, one of the beneficiaries, described the program as life-changing. As a single mother striving to support her family, she expressed gratitude for the skills and support provided, which have opened up new opportunities for her. Through the catering training, she secured an industrial training opportunity, thanks to the Oladele Fajemirokun Foundation.

Egbue emphasized that the Foundation’s commitment to women’s empowerment extends beyond the program. Ongoing support is offered to program graduates, including mentoring, stipends, and opportunities for further education and training.
