Different reactions as Igbo community holds grand funeral for young boy, Sylvester Oromoni

The burial ceremony of Sylvester Oromoni Jr., the late student of Dowen College, has evoked mixed reactions as a video of the event went viral. It took place in his father’s residence in Ogbe Ijoh, Warri, Delta State.

To recap, Sylvester tragically passed away in November 2021 following alleged bullying by his seniors at the Lagos school. However, the school management denied the claims, asserting that the boy sustained injuries while playing football with his fellow students.

This disagreement resulted in a legal battle between the deceased’s parents and the school management. The parents argued that their son had no pre-existing health issues before the unfortunate incident.

In 2021, Sylvester Oromoni Sr., the father, announced that his son would not be laid to rest until justice was served.

In January 2022, an autopsy revealed that the 12-year-old Dowen student died from “acute lung injury from chemical intoxication in a background of blunt force.”

The Lagos Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) subsequently issued a second report, ruling that Sylvester’s death was natural. This has sparked ongoing disputes between the family and the authorities.

After a two-year period, the parents of the deceased finally conducted his burial on January 27th in Delta. The ceremony attracted notable figures, including human rights activist Femi Falana.
