The Code of Conduct Bureau has issued a warning to former and current public office holders in Abia State, urging them to declare their assets without delay.

In a statement signed by Abel Sunday, the Abia State Director of the Code of Conduct Bureau, the agency emphasized that it is mandatory for public office holders to declare their assets both before assuming office and after leaving office.

The statement noted that several individuals, including former Commissioners, legislators, special advisers to the Governor, Permanent Secretaries, Directors, and some serving officers, have failed to declare their assets, thereby contravening relevant sections of the Nigerian Constitution. The Code of Conduct Bureau expressed its dissatisfaction with the fact that many individuals who previously held public office and some who are currently in positions of authority have yet to approach the Bureau’s office in the state to fulfill their obligations.

The statement cautioned those who have not declared their assets to visit the Code of Conduct Bureau’s office and provide the necessary records of their assets. It further warned that failure to comply with this requirement may result in sanctions, such as being barred from holding public office in the future or facing prosecution.
