The House of Representatives has put forth a resolution urging the federal government to implement a ban on the use of styrofoam throughout Nigeria. This decision was made during a session on Wednesday, following a motion presented by Ibrahim Shagaya.

This move aligns with the recent actions taken by the Lagos State government, which imposed a ban on the use of styrofoam materials within the state. The motion presented by Shagaya highlights the significant environmental and public health risks associated with the use of styrofoam and single-use plastics in Nigeria. These risks include the pollution of waterways, soil, and air quality.

Shagaya further emphasized the adverse health effects linked to the chemicals found in styrofoam, which include cancer, vision and hearing loss, impaired memory and concentration, as well as nervous system effects.

As a result, the House of Representatives has resolved to call upon the Federal Government to impose a comprehensive ban on the production, importation, distribution, and utilization of styrofoam and single-use plastics across the entire country.

Furthermore, the House has recommended that the Federal Government implement a phased approach to the ban. This approach would allow sufficient time for businesses and industries to transition to alternative eco-friendly materials and practices, ensuring a smooth adjustment period.
