Mrs. Caroline Okolie, the acting Director of Library Services at the Enugu State Library, has called on the state government to consider using noise-proof materials for the library building.

This measure aims to reduce the noise disturbances that currently affect the library’s surroundings and allow readers to concentrate better.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu, Okolie emphasized the importance of creating a conducive environment for library users. The Enugu State Library, constructed over 50 years ago, now finds itself surrounded by bustling bus terminals and businesses that generate noise within the library premises.

Okolie highlighted the need for modern facilities such as an E-Library service to enhance the library experience and attract more users. She acknowledged that the library’s ability to cope with the noise has been significantly affected by the increasing number of businesses and urban development in the vicinity.

Relocating the library to another area would not necessarily solve the noise problem, as future development could lead to similar challenges. However, Okolie suggested that implementing noise-proof materials in the library building would create a quiet environment conducive to focused work.

While the number of library users has declined compared to previous years, Okolie mentioned that students tend to flock to the library in large numbers during examination periods. Additionally, the library actively encourages people of all ages to utilize its resources by organizing library periods for children on the second Saturday of each month.

Upgrading the infrastructure of the Enugu State Library, including the implementation of noise-proof measures, would contribute to an improved and more user-friendly environment for individuals seeking knowledge and information within the library’s premises.
