A part of the Supreme Court, including three offices, fell victim to a fire incident on Monday.

The blaze, which began around 8 am, engulfed one of the chambers belonging to a justice. Our correspondent observed that books and furniture in one of the affected offices were damaged.

An unnamed court staff reported that the affected chamber belonged to Justice Mohammed Saulawa. The incident caused some panic among the personnel, but many joined efforts to extinguish the fire using fire extinguishers. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the books in the offices suffered damage.

Dr. Festus Akande, the court’s spokesperson, attributed the fire to an electrical fault and clarified that it affected only one chamber, dispelling rumours that it had damaged election petitions. The PDP, however, expressed suspicion about the fire’s timing and called for a thorough investigation, as it coincided with high-profile electoral cases, including presidential election appeals, before the court.

The PDP emphasized the need for transparency in the investigation, unlike previous incidents that were allegedly concealed.

Additionally, they called on the Federal Government to enhance security around the Supreme Court. The Federal Capital Territory Police Command stated that they are investigating the cause of the fire, but details about the damaged properties remain to be confirmed.
