The Anambra State Government has expressed deep concern regarding the theft and vandalism of the solar-powered streetlights installed within the state.

According to a statement issued by Paul Nwosu, the Commissioner for Information, these streetlight installations were a crucial component of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s initiative to create a more livable Anambra. The streetlights were intended to provide illumination in various areas during the night, enhancing safety and visibility for residents and visitors alike.

He said: “We discovered that the cables and accessories of the new cost-saving Solar Street Lights being installed to illuminate our roads and streets are being stolen and vandalised by some enemies of the progress of the state.

“This can no longer be tolerated. The Street Lights Monitoring Committees set up by the Ministry of Power and Water Resources are hereby directed by the Government to be more vigilant and firm in the exercise of their responsibilities, which is to protect and apprehend these culprits.”

Additionally, Nwosu highlighted that a significant number of the streetlights are being knocked down by drivers who engage in careless driving. He expressed concern that these drivers disregard the presence of the streetlights, despite being aware that they were installed using public funds contributed by taxpayers.

He said further: “Government is calling on the local Street Light Monitoring Committees and communities’ leaders to take full ownership of these assets and guard them with eagle eyes.

“Anybody caught pilfering or destroying the street solar light cables or accessories should be immediately apprehended and handed over to the police.”

While urging the police to join in the arrest of vandals, Nwosu avowed that “Anambra State can only make the needed progress if these retrogressive elements are put in check.”
