The Abia State government has decided to withdraw the court case that was initiated two years ago against Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) for alleged non-remittance of Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax.

Governor Alex Otti conveyed this decision during a meeting with the university’s management, led by Vice Chancellor Professor Maduebibisi Iwe, at his residence in Isiala Ngwa South. Responding to the appeal made by the university’s management to drop the case filed by the Abia State Board of Internal Revenue Service, Governor Otti assured that the matter, which predates his administration, would be resolved amicably.

“As a government, we have no intention of taking you to court. Since this is an issue that occurred before our time, we will investigate and find a peaceful resolution. There is no problem that we cannot sit down and resolve,” he stated.

Governor Otti also pledged to engage in discussions with the university and the surrounding communities to address any issues hindering the procurement of the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for the university’s acquired land. He recalled how his administration had compensated the owners of approximately 150 demolished buildings along Ossah Road in Umuahia prior to commencing road construction.

Furthermore, Governor Otti emphasized the importance of an open-minded approach by the Investigation Panel assigned to look into the students’ riot that led to the closure of the school. He urged the panel members to uncover the root causes of the riot, expressing concern about the disruption to academic activities and the potential negative impact on the younger generation.

In an earlier plea, Vice Chancellor Iwe requested that the Governor expedite the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy to the university, as it would assist in safeguarding the institution’s property.
