The Abia State government has issued a warning to security agencies operating within the state, cautioning them against unfairly extracting money from innocent citizens and other residents while enforcing the ban on commercial motorcycle operations in the Umuahia and Aba metropolis.

The government clarified that it was merely reaffirming the previously announced ban on Okada movements in these areas, as established by the previous state administration.

This information was communicated by Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, during a press briefing that followed the State Executive Council meeting. Kanu advised security agencies to exercise professionalism in their enforcement efforts, emphasizing the need to protect the well-being of the people.

Furthermore, he disclosed that the commencement of the Single Treasure Account (TSA), introduced by Governor Alex Otti, is scheduled for September 1, 2023. Kanu affirmed the irrevocability of the TSA policy, stating that its implementation would usher in transparency and adherence to proper procedures.

“It is one of the cardinal aspects of this administration in terms of due process and transparency. So come September 1st, the Single Treasury Account will commence and all government payments would be made to pass the single platform,” he said. 

According to a government insider who spoke to Vistanaij Media, certain organizations responsible for generating revenue, which includes transport unions, purportedly approached the State government with a proposal to amend the TSA system in order to establish a ‘fair commission’. However, our correspondent was unable to verify whether the State government eventually acceded to this request.
