The Yoruba Council of Elders has called upon the Federal Government to facilitate the return of individuals who were forced into exile due to past oppressive regimes.
These exiles, including Professor Banji Akintoye and Chief Sunday Igboho, were advocating for the fair and dignified treatment of their law-abiding fellow Yoruba citizens.
This appeal was made in a communique issued by the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) after a meeting of the Secretary-General and state secretaries held in Ado Ekiti. The YCE expressed concern about the declining acceptance of Yoruba language, culture, and civilization.
During the meeting, the YCE also discussed the presentation of a book titled ‘Yoruba Renaissance, Challenges and Prospects,’ authored by Sir Egunjobi, a renowned educationist. They described the book as an insightful exploration of Yoruba history and contemporary affairs, shedding light on both recurring and emerging challenges and prospects for the Yoruba people.
Furthermore, the YCE called upon the Federal Government to uphold its responsibility of providing equal protection to all citizens and constituent groups across the country. The elders criticized former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo for his recent actions against traditional rulers in Oyo State, stating that he should apologize and make amends.
To promote the book ‘Yoruba Renaissance, Challenges and Prospects,’ the YCE plans to conduct visits to the governors of Yoruba states, recognizing them as the chief executive officers of their respective states. The book is described as a comprehensive effort to secure the prominent leadership position of the Yoruba people within Nigeria, covering various aspects of historical, social, economic, and political activities.
