The Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) in Ogun State, Adewale Adenugba, has announced plans to dedicate the 2023 Pharmacists Day celebration, which falls on the 25th of September, to conducting free medical outreach programs in selected communities across Abeokuta, the state capital.
Additionally, the state PSN chapter intends to visit correctional homes and orphanages as part of their activities.
Adenugba explained that the beneficiaries of these free medical outreaches would receive basic health assessments, health education, and free medication. They have also identified specific schools for discussions on the dangers of drug abuse, along with media engagement to continue educating the public.
Speaking about the theme for this year’s Pharmacists’ Day, ‘Pharmacy: Strengthening The Health System,’ Adenugba highlighted the significance of pharmacy practice. He emphasized that pharmacists, as the most accessible healthcare professionals in many communities in Nigeria, provide affordable healthcare solutions, contributing to improved public health standards.
Adenugba also advocated for an expanded role for pharmacists, allowing them to prescribe and initiate medication, especially for managing patients with long-term conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and HIV. He pointed out that community pharmacists have demonstrated success in this area, aligning with global goals like the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-3) on Access to Essential Health Services.
He noted that pharmacy practice within Nigerian hospital settings is advancing, with pharmacists gaining specialization and certification. He expressed hope that the Federal Government’s gazette backing the practice of Consultant Pharmacists would soon be adopted in Ogun State.
Adenugba concluded by explaining that World Pharmacists Day is an initiative of the International Pharmaceutical Federation, established in 2009. Its purpose is to highlight the role of pharmacists in global health improvement and to encourage actions that promote healthcare worldwide.
