Update: DSS confirms Emefiele’s arrest and detainment

In a recent announcement made through their official Twitter account on Saturday, June 10, 2023, the Department of State Services (DSS) disclosed that Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has been taken into their custody.

The DSS, responsible for national security and intelligence gathering, confirmed the news regarding Emefiele’s detainment.

The statement read, “The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria is now in its custody for some investigative reasons.

“The public, particularly the media, is enjoined to apply utmost caution in the reportage and narratives concerning this.”

According to Vistanaij Media, President Bola Tinubu took the decision to suspend Emefiele from his position as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on Friday evening, effective immediately.

Following his suspension, Emefiele was instructed to hand over his responsibilities to Adebisi Shonubi, the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will assume the role of acting CBN governor while the investigation and reforms are being conducted.

Rumors started circulating on Friday evening regarding the arrest of the suspended CBN governor by the Department of State Services, but these reports remained unconfirmed.

However, Peter Afunaya, the spokesperson for the DSS, has now officially confirmed that the suspended CBN governor is indeed in the custody of the agency.
