Two Chinese Nationals Convicted by EFCC in Sokoto

On Friday, Justice Abubakar Mahmud Talba of the Court of Appeal Sokoto Division convicted and sentenced two Chinese nationals, Mr. Meng Wei Kun and Mr. Xu Kuai, on Count 1 and Count 2 of a 3-count charge brought against them by the Sokoto Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The charge related to conspiracy, money laundering, and attempted bribery to the tune of N50 million.

The Federal High Court Sokoto had previously discharged and acquitted the accused persons. Justice Talba overturned this decision and berated the respondents for trying to frustrate the appeal through maneuverings.

He emphasized that courts must allow cases to be heard on their merits and determined that the EFCC had proven Count 1 and 2 beyond reasonable doubt. Justice Talba convicted and sentenced the Chinese nationals to 3 years on each of the two counts with an option of N10 million fine each on each count.

He also condemned corruption and stressed that the Nigerian courts will not condone it.
