During the combined convocation ceremonies for the 6th, 7th, and 8th graduating classes of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) in Lafia, Nasarawa State, President Bola Tinubu delivered a strong message to Nigerian universities regarding the indiscriminate awarding of honorary doctorate degrees.

Tinubu emphasized that such practices undermine the fundamental principles of academic integrity and should be discontinued.

Represented by the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Chris Jibreel-Maiyaki, Tinubu stressed that honorary degrees should be reserved for deserving Nigerians who have made significant contributions to societal growth. He highlighted that academic competence and professional training are only partial qualifications for building a strong and prosperous nation.

Tinubu emphasized the importance of moral training, ethical standards, and integrity within universities’ management and learning environments. He expressed concern over the devaluation of degrees through the widespread and indiscriminate awarding of honorary doctorate degrees, which deviates from common practices within the university community.

Furthermore, Tinubu pledged to be responsive to the needs of universities and their communities, aiming to improve overall outcomes. He also made a commitment to address the infrastructural deficits in Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions across the country.
