President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff, the Amanyanabo of Twon Brass Kingdom of Bayelsa State, as the Chancellor of the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU) in Okerenkoko, Delta State.

The appointment took place during the university’s maiden convocation ceremony.

Representing President Tinubu at the event was Mr. Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development. As part of the convocation ceremony, the university bestowed a Doctor of Philosophy in Education (Honoris Causa) upon former militant leader High Chief Oweizide Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo. Additionally, King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff was honored with a Doctor of Letters for his contributions to the growth and development of the university.

In his address, President Tinubu acknowledged the university’s vision of becoming the premier maritime institution for those seeking a career in the maritime industry. He expressed confidence that the university would achieve significant milestones in building Nigeria’s capacity in maritime technology and business, positioning the country as one of the world’s leading maritime economies.

President Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced by the university during its early stages but assured that the government would continue to support its needs. He emphasized his administration’s commitment to ensuring the university’s success and its contribution to employment creation and wealth generation in the global maritime economy.
