The Federal Government seeks the cooperation of the National Assembly to address Nigeria's challenges

The federal government has called for cooperation with the leadership of the 10th National Assembly to address Nigeria’s numerous economic, social, and political challenges.

Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima made this appeal during a two-day retreat for the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, held in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. The event was organized by the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies in collaboration with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.

Shettima emphasized that governance is a collective responsibility and not a personal endeavor. He stressed the importance of avoiding division and encouraged a collaborative approach to governance. He highlighted that members of the current government, including the Chiefs of Staff, Deputy Chiefs of Staff, the First Lady of the Federation, and the Secretary to the Federation, are all alumni of the institution. This shared background underscores the need for collaboration and engagement rather than conflict.

Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio echoed the importance of collaboration, emphasizing that Nigeria cannot progress unless various stakeholders and groups recognize the necessity of working together effectively. He cautioned against assigning blame to specific political parties like the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that Nigeria faces collective action problems due to the failure of relevant groups and stakeholders to collaborate.

Akpabio called for unity of purpose among lawmakers, highlighting that regardless of the political party that brought them to the National Assembly, they are now collectively responsible for Nigeria’s future. He urged all members to work together to address the country’s challenges, emphasizing that a united effort could help the 10th Assembly overcome any obstacles it faces.
