A crucial meeting aimed at potentially averting the proposed nationwide strike by Organised Labour is currently underway at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
As the report was being filed, labour leaders were seen arriving at the meeting venue.
Notable attendees include Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Emma Ugboaja, the General Secretary of the Congress, and Nuhu Toro, the General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress (TUC). Leading the negotiation on the government side are Femi Gbajiabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, and Simon Lalong and Nkeiruka Onyejoecha, the ministers of Labour and Employment, respectively.
It is worth recalling that the NLC and TUC had issued a threat to commence a nationwide indefinite strike on October 3rd, 2023, in protest against the Federal Government’s fuel subsidy removal policy.
The meeting takes place shortly after President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day Broadcast, in which he announced a N25,000 salary award package for low-grade civil servants in the country.
