Large numbers of young people gathered in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, on Tuesday to peacefully protest and demand justice for the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad.
These youths, dressed in black T-shirts, assembled in significant numbers at the skating ground, an open area within the well-known Panseke market in Abeokuta. They carried placards with the inscriptions “#JusticeforMohbad” as they voiced their calls for justice.
The rally commenced in the Panseke market area, covering several locations in the state capital, including Onikolobo, Oke-Ilwo, Omida, and Isale Igbehin, among others.
They rallied for the government to apprehend Naira Marley and Sam Larry, while investigations into the musician’s death are already underway.
The renowned singer, aged 27, passed away last Tuesday under unclear circumstances, prompting widespread demands for a thorough investigation into his demise. Many social media users assert that the music star was subjected to bullying, possibly contributing to his death.
This protest marks the third in a series, following similar demonstrations in Lagos and Benin City, the capital of Edo State.
Videos and images from the Abeokuta protest have already begun circulating on social media, garnering comments like “This is wonderful; justice must prevail” from Adekunle King, a cybersecurity expert. Imran Mohammed, a supporter of President Buhari’s APC party, tweeted “Justice for Mohbad protest in Ogun.”
Police officers were seen walking alongside the protesters to maintain peace during the demonstration.
In the meantime, the Lagos state government has invited the State Security Services to collaborate with the police in investigating the circumstances surrounding the young artist’s death. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Femi Hamzat, have also visited Mohbad’s family to offer their condolences.
