The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expressed alarm over an alleged plan by suspected arsonists to set fire to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Lokoja.

The SDP’s statement, titled “The Plot to Burn Down INEC Office in Lokoja Exposed,” was issued by the Director General of the MuriSam Campaign Council’s New Media team, Isaiah Davies.

In the statement, the SDP urged security agencies, the media, and the general public to take note of the situation. They called on security agents to enhance security around the INEC office in Lokoja and requested relevant security formations to safeguard all electoral materials used in the recently concluded gubernatorial election in the state. The SDP alleged that the planned attack aimed to destroy evidence of rigging by causing a fire outbreak within the building housing the sensitive materials.

The Kogi State All Progressives Congress Governorship Campaign Council swiftly responded, holding the SDP responsible if any harm befalls the INEC office. The Campaign Council accused the SDP of raising a false alarm to conceal their own sinister motive of setting fire to the INEC office. They emphasized the need for heightened security around all INEC offices across the state and dismissed the SDP’s claims as baseless propaganda.

The Campaign Council commended the people of Kogi for participating in a credible, free, and fair election, despite alleged intimidation and violence. They asserted that the SDP’s electoral performance did not match their pre-election boasts and criticized the party for attacking INEC and others instead of accepting their defeat gracefully.

The Campaign Council concluded by stating that they were not afraid of the SDP’s legal challenge, as the party had failed to win the election, steal ballot boxes, or sow division among the people of Kogi State. They deemed the SDP’s participation in the race as an endless string of failures.
