Sarah Jama Biography

Sarah Jama is a disability rights activist from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, who co-founded both the Disability Rights Network Ontario and the Disability Justice Network Ontario. She was born with cerebral palsy, which has confined her to a wheelchair since birth. She strongly supports inclusive policies and human rights.

After completing her studies at McMaster University in Social Science, she decided to settle in Hamilton, where she also co-founded the Hamilton Encampment Support Network in early 2021 to help people access affordable housing.

In February 2021, Jama testified before the Canadian Senate’s legal and constitutional affairs committee to argue against Bill C-7, which she believed would increase access to euthanasia for people with mental health disabilities rather than providing them with necessary mental health support.

Jama also gained media attention in 2021 when she was detained during a demonstration against the demolition of homeless encampments in Hamilton. She was accused of assaulting a police officer and interfering with their investigation, but the charges were later dropped after she signed a peace bond.

Sarah Jama Career

Sarah Jama is currently working as a program coordinator at the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion. Prior to that, she served as a community engagement liaison for the city of Hamilton while working under the guidance of Councillor Matthew Green. Jama is also a keynote speaker who frequently gives presentations on topics such as leadership, diversity, and justice. To date, she has delivered nearly a hundred talks.

Awards and Recognitions

In 2016, Sarah Jama’s contribution to the field of disability justice earned her a place on the CBC’s list of the top five most fascinating people in Hamilton. A year later, she received the Evelyn Myrie Political Action Award at the John Holland Awards for her community work. Jama was also nominated for a YWCA Women of Distinction award in 2017. In 2022, she was recognized for her community leadership and received an award.
