Pope Will Again Celebrate Holy Thursday At A Prison

This will be the sixth Mass of the Lord’s Supper of his pontificate to be praised with detainees.

There was a lot of theory about where Pope Francis would commend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening, April 14, 2022. Italian jail pastors have ended the quiet in an explanation distributed on April 13: The top of the Catholic Church will visit the Civitavecchia jail in private, where he will wash the feet of 12 prisoners.

At the prison of this port city in the Lazio district, which houses somewhere in the range of 500 detainees – 100 a greater number of than guidelines permit, as per the Ministry of Justice – the Pope will communicate a message of “closeness and trust,” the note said.

As he did in Buenos Aires as ecclesiastical overseer, the Argentine Pontiff by and large remembers the washing of the feet with individuals some way or another “on the edges” of society, especially those in penitentiaries or outcast focuses.

Yet again pope Francis has picked “an existential outskirts,” says Father Raffaele Grimaldi, top of the Italian jail pastors. He sees washing the feet of detainees as a demonstration that is “modest, tremendous, and shocking, which Jesus the Good Shepherd has given to humankind.”

Father Grimaldi honored the 85-year-old pope who, regardless of “his actual weariness and secret sufferings, never tires of voyaging dusty, sloppy, and lopsided ways [… ] and isn’t afraid to take care of business to wash the feet of such countless Judases denounced by human Justice, however saved by God’s Mercy.”

Since his political decision in 2013, the Bishop of Rome has decided to withdraw from custom and not praise the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at St. John Lateran, the basilica of Rome, as his ancestors did.

He has visited a detainment community a few times, in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019. In 2020, there was no washing of the feet in light of the wellbeing emergency and in 2021, he commended the Last Supper with Cardinal Angelo Becciu, who is at the focal point of a significant monetary preliminary in the Vatican.

Prior to Francis, Pope John Paul II paid a peaceful visit to the prison of Civitavecchia on March 19, 1987.
