Biography

Poonam Sinha is a politician in India, however she began her career as an actress and a fashion model. Earlier in her career, she was known by her screen name, Komal, when she worked in Hindi movies. In 1968, she competed and won the title of Miss Young India. Her husband, the actor and politician Shatrughna Sinha, is her partner in life. She had leading parts in Hindi films and also produced two movies in addition to her acting career.

She appeared in a number of films, including Jigri Dost, Dil Diwana, and others, in which she had a leading role and was billed as Komal. They had first encountered one another in a railway cabin earlier in their journey.

After being married, she basically retired from the performing industry so that she could focus on raising their children.

After an extended absence of thirty years, she made her acting debut in the film Jodhaa Akbar (2008), portraying the role of Mallika Hamida Banu Begum, the mother of Emperor Akbar. The film was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and stars Hrithik Roshan.

She joined the Samajwadi Party on April 16, 2019, while her husband Shatrughan Sinha joined the Indian National Congress the same day after resigning from his position in the BJP. She was defeated by Rajnath Singh in the election for the Loksabha seat representing Lucknow (Lok Sabha constituency).
