Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s assertion that his administration inherited liabilities from his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.
Obi questioned why Tinubu did not provide specific details about the liabilities inherited from the previous government in a statement issued on Thursday. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in responsible governance, stating that the government should disclose the extent of the deficit inherited to inform the public about the current state of affairs and the path ahead.
Recalling a similar claim made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in 2015 when it took over from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obi expressed disappointment that the Buhari administration failed to make significant improvements and instead left the country with a heavier debt burden.
He pointed out that during the Buhari administration, the nation’s development indicators, including education, healthcare, poverty eradication, and security, worsened, resulting in the current dire state of affairs. Obi emphasized that Nigerians are aware of the existing challenges and are looking for measurable and verifiable steps to address and improve the situation.
Overall, Obi challenged Tinubu’s claim and underscored the need for transparency and concrete actions to drive positive change in the country.
