The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has announced that the 2023 Independence Day anniversary will be observed in a more subdued manner, although he did not provide specific reasons for this decision.
Akume made this announcement in Abuja during a discussion with State House correspondents after meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima.
He explained that Independence Day is a historically significant event for any nation, including Nigeria. However, due to certain circumstances, this year’s celebration will be low-key. Akume stated that there will be no extravagant festivities at venues like the Eagle Square.
Akume encouraged Nigerians to use the occasion of Independence Day to reflect on the unity of the country and the path ahead. He emphasized that it is a time for deep introspection as a nation and expressed optimism about the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
Regarding the impending strike by organised labour, the Secretary to the Government expressed confidence that the issues leading to the strike would be resolved amicably. He appealed to organised labour to exercise patience as the government works towards finding solutions to their demands.
Akume acknowledged the patriotism of labour leaders and stressed that it is not in the best interest of workers or anyone to have a strike at this time in Nigeria’s history. He affirmed the government’s commitment to improving the standard of living for Nigerian workers and fostering prosperity for all, although such changes take time to implement fully.
