During a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s federal government made five significant promises to Nigerian workers on October 1, 2023.
The aim of the meeting was to address the dispute arising from the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and find resolutions. The promises made by the federal government during the meeting are as follows:
1. Provisional Wage Increment: The federal government announced a temporary wage increase of N25,000 (now increased to N35,000) for all treasury-paid federal government workers for a period of six months.
2. Provision of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Buses: The federal government committed to expediting the provision of CNG buses to alleviate transportation challenges caused by the removal of PMS subsidy.
3. Support for Micro and Small-Scale Enterprises: The federal government pledged to provide funds to support micro and small-scale enterprises.
4. Waiver of VAT on Diesel: VAT on diesel will be waived for the next six months.
5. Cash Transfer to Households: The federal government will initiate the payment of N75,000 to 15 million households, disbursed at a rate of N25,000 per month, for a three-month period from October to December 2023.
The meeting is set to continue on Monday, October 2, 2023.
