Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer in Delta State, has expressed deep concern regarding the escalating cases of suicide in Nigeria.
Edafe specifically highlighted a recent rise in suicide incidents among couples.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police recounted a distressing incident where a man, who had been physically abusing his wife, eventually hanged himself. He also shared the tragic story of a 16-year-old girl who took her own life after her father threatened to discipline her for sleeping outside.
In light of these disturbing occurrences, Edafe urged Nigerians to prioritize their mental well-being, emphasizing that it is the individual who loses in such tragic situations.
He advised the public to avoid environments and situations that do not bring them happiness.
“Suicide rates have been increasing recently, particularly among couples. In one instance, a man was physically assaulting his wife, and when neighbors intervened to rescue her, he went into his house and hanged himself.
“In another incident, a sixteen-year-old girl feared being beaten by her father after sleeping outside. Despite her efforts to appease her parents, she tragically took her own life by hanging herself.
“Let us prioritize our mental health, as it is the person who dies that loses. Any place where you do not find peace is not meant for you. Let us watch out for one another,” Edafe stated in a post on his social media handle.
