KONGONET, the Kogi NGOS NETWORK, has called upon security agencies, civil society organizations (CSOs), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the media to uphold the highest professional standards in the upcoming governorship election in Kogi State.
The Chairperson of KONGONET, Idris Ozovehe Muraina, emphasized the need for collective efforts to build trust in the electoral system and ensure the will of the people is respected.
Muraina highlighted that the peaceful conduct of the governorship election relies on the collective responsibility of civil society organizations, security agencies, the media, and INEC. He urged stakeholders to rise above personal interests and affiliations and work together with professionalism, integrity, and a shared vision of a peaceful and prosperous Kogi State.
Stressing the importance of upholding professional conduct, Muraina called on stakeholders to remain unbiased, impartial, and objective in their activities. He emphasized that their roles should be driven solely by the pursuit of truth, justice, and the best interests of the people of Kogi State. Muraina urged security agencies to fulfill their responsibility of maintaining law and order during the election with professionalism, impartiality, and respect for human rights.
The KONGONET Chairperson implored security agencies to be vigilant, proactive, and responsive to any potential threats or acts of violence. He also urged them to work together to prevent any form of intimidation, harassment, or coercion that could undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
Regarding the media, Muraina called for responsible journalism, emphasizing the principles of fairness, accuracy, and impartiality. He encouraged media outlets to report the news objectively, without sensationalism or bias. Their role is not only to inform but also to educate and enlighten the citizens of Kogi State by providing balanced coverage of the electoral process. Muraina stressed the importance of the media embracing professionalism and contributing significantly to the promotion of peace and stability.
Finally, Muraina called on INEC to ensure the conduct of free, fair, credible, and verifiable elections. He urged the electoral body to discharge its duties with unwavering integrity, transparency, and efficiency. The successful organization and management of the election by INEC are crucial for upholding the democratic process and fostering trust among the electorate.
