The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has taken measures to enforce the rights of data subjects and foster trust in Nigeria’s digital economy ecosystem.
In a guidance notice titled “Guidance Notice on the Filling of Data Protection Compliance Audit Returns, CAR,” the Commission has advised data controllers and processors to submit compliance audit returns. Failure to do so may result in their exclusion from the National Data Protection Adequacy Programme (NaDPAP) Whitelist. The entities affected include banks, telecommunications companies, hospitals, schools, ICT companies, and data centers, among others.
The NDPC’s National Commissioner/CEO, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, recently announced that the Commission is conducting free induction training for designated Data Protection Officers in both the public and private sectors. This initiative aims to ensure that Nigeria can actively contribute to the global digital economy in a competitive manner.
The Commission further recommends that agents and contractors who handle data processing on behalf of data controllers should receive training and be registered on the Commission’s portal.
