Marvel Shows Off Shang Chi as the First Asian Hero in New Trailer – Watch Trailer

Marvel has released the trailer of its upcoming superhero film, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” – Marvel’s first film with an Asian lead.

The trailer introduces the lead character Shang-Chi, who’s known in the comics as Marvel’s preeminent master of martial arts.

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” follows Shang-Li, a trained martial artist/assassin who flees from his father’s guidance in favour of a normal life in America. But when the terrorist group Ten Rings threatens his existence, the titular character must reclaim his martial arts origins.

Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu stars as the film’s lead character. The actor famously lobbied to play an Asian superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in tweets dating back to 2014. The studio heard his call and cast him in the role five years later, with Liu making his first official appearance at San Diego Comic-Con.

In a 2019 interview with HuffPost, Liu said that he viewed the role as “an opportunity to re-introduce ourselves to the world following years of stereotypes and caricatures and tired tropes.”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the second title in Marvel’s Phase Four following Black Widow, will be released to theatres on September 3, 2021.
