According to the Lagos State Government, the building that partially collapsed on Oloto Street, Borno Way, Ebute Metta, had already been identified as distressed and marked for demolition prior to its collapse.
Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, revealed this information during an inspection of the old two-floor structure that collapsed in the early hours of Thursday.
In a statement by Mr. Mukaila Sanusi, the spokesperson for the Ministry, it was mentioned that the commissioner expressed sympathy for those affected by the collapse.
Olumide stated that the building was among those recently identified as distressed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) during its routine monitoring earlier in the month.
He further explained that the agency had issued statutory notices, including a quit notice and seal order, and had initiated the process for the building’s removal.
The commissioner expressed disappointment that the occupants of the building had ignored the notices issued by LASBCA, thereby putting themselves in danger.
Directing LASBCA to demolish the building immediately, he urged residents of the state to always heed government notices and vacate any distressed building to safeguard lives and property.
