Kwankwaso Holds Meeting with Tinubu at Aso Rock

On Friday, President Bola Tinubu held a meeting with Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State, at the presidential villa in Abuja.

This meeting followed a previous four-hour discussion between the two leaders in Paris, France, a couple of weeks before Tinubu’s upcoming inauguration as president.

The discussions primarily focused on Kwankwaso’s potential involvement in Tinubu’s administration, as the latter plans to form a “government of national unity.” Additionally, they addressed matters regarding the election of national assembly leaders ahead of the inauguration scheduled for June 13.

Kwankwaso, in principle, expressed his willingness to join Tinubu’s government, pending consultations with stakeholders from both sides. During the meeting, Tinubu also expressed concern about the strained relationship between Abdullahi Ganduje, the former governor of Kano State, and Kwankwaso. Tinubu promised to mediate and work towards reconciling the two leaders, as Ganduje had previously served as Kwankwaso’s deputy during his tenure as governor from 2011 to 2015, but their relationship deteriorated over time.

In the presidential election held on February 25, Tinubu emerged as the winner with 8,794,726 votes, defeating Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 6,984,520 votes. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) garnered 6,101,533 votes, while Kwankwaso secured 1,496,687 votes.
