Kai Lukas Havertz, born on the 11th of June, 1999, is a German professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Chelsea Football Club.

EARLY LIFE

Kai Havertz was born in the Aachen locality in Germany. The place is known for being the first territory that the US army captured during the 2nd world war.

Havertz is nicknamed Alleskonner which translates to Jack of all trades in English. He was born to a father who is a police officer and a mother who is a lawyer. He also has two older siblings, Leah Havertz and Jan Havertz.

 

His family are lovers of football, but the person that truly inspired him to make a career of the sport was his grandfather, Richard Havertz.

His grandfather was a former footballer and a youth club chairman. He would often take Kai to play football games at a field close to their house and encouraged the youngster to take the game seriously. This led to Havertz getting into the Aachen football academy.

 

His U-12 team faced Leverkusen’s U-12 team and after a brilliant showing, he was snapped up by Bayer Leverkusen.  

CAREER BEGINNING

Kai started his professional career at Bayer Leverkusen In 2016. He made his debut in 2016 and is credited to be the club’s youngest ever debutant.

The Chelsea star scored his first goal in 2017 and by doing so, he became the youngest ever Bundesliga scorer for Bayer Leverkusen.

As a youngster in the Bayer Leverkusen first team, Kai was trusted a lot that he played up to 100 games before leaving. Chelsea Football Club eventually became his next destination in 2020 for a fee of €84 million.

Every Chelsea fan would always remember Kai as the player who scored the winning goal in both the Champions League final and the Club World Cup final.

CAREER LIFE

17-year-old Kai Havertz made his debut for Bayer Leverkusen. He came on as a second-half substitute but couldn’t prevent the club from losing 2-1 vs Werder Bremen.

Kai Havertz broke the record for being the youngest footballer to appear in a Bundesliga match for Bayer Leverkusen. This record has already been broken however by Florian Wirtz, another sensational talent.

Kai was selected to start against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16. Although Bayer Leverkusen lost this match, it was his first appearance in the Champions League.

It would be a surprise to many, but Kai could not feature in the return leg against Atletico Madrid because of an examination in school. Yes, he graduated from secondary school while having the time of his life as a professional footballer.

Fast forward to April of 2017, Kai Havertz broke another Bayer Leverkusen record by being the youngest player to score for the club in a game versus Wolfsburg that ended 3-3.

It was a proud moment for the Chelsea superstar and marked the beginning of more goals to come. That season ended with Kai bagging four goals and helping Bayer Leverkusen to a 12th place finish in the Bundesliga.

Exactly one year later in the Bundesliga, Kai celebrated his 50th game for Bayer Leverkusen. He made a total of 30 appearances for them in 2017/18 but this time only managed to score three goals. It is not so bad for an 18-year-old who is a midfielder. Bayer Leverkusen finished 5th in that season.

Kai Havertz exploded in the 2018/19 season. Bayer Leverkusen played in the UEFA Europa League and Kai was Extraordinary for them, especially in the Bundesliga.

The German attacking midfielder scored a couple of goals in different matches. He scored his first penalty goal and appeared in his 100th career game Surprisingly in April just like his 50th appearance. Kai’s goal tally was that season was a resounding 20 goals in 42 appearances for a teenage midfielder.

That season was arguably his best season as a professional footballer at Bayer Leverkusen. He also came second in the German footballer of the year award only behind Marco Reus by 37 votes.

The 2019/20 season was quiet for Bayer Leverkusen but was a good year for Kai as a footballer. He found the net on 18 occasions and appeared in a total of 45 games for Bayer Leverkusen.

The 2020/21 campaign for Chelsea was a memorable one. It was spearheaded by club legend, Frank Lampard who convinced Kai Havertz to join the club. Havertz came in for the sum of around £84 million.

That season was not his best in terms of finding the back of the net, but Chelsea did well as a team. Although Lampard was sacked, Tuchel came in to help the squad win their 2nd ever UEFA Champions League title. Havertz’s goal in the final of the competition proved to be the winner against a Manchester City team that was seen as favourites.

Kai also reached the final of the FA Cup with Chelsea, but the team lost against a motivated Leicester City. Havertz managed 9 goals in 45 appearances for Chelsea in that campaign.

The 2021/22 season saw Chelsea lift the Club World Cup with Kai’s 117th-minute penalty being the decisive factor for the Blues. He had also won the UEFA Super Cup with Chelsea against Villarreal in a penalty shootout. This campaign was a statistically better one for him as he was able to find the net 14 times in 47 appearances.

Kai has represented Germany on 25 occasions as a senior player and has scored 8 goals. He was the first player born in 1999 to represent Germany, back in 2018. He was part of the UEFA European U-17 Championship team the tournament in 2016.

PERSONAL LIFE AND RELATIONSHIPS

During Kai’s time at Bayer Leverkusen, he met Sofia Weber with whom he has a romantic relationship. The two lovebirds kissed as they lifted the UEFA Champions League title in 2021.

Kai is also a lover of animals and loves taking photos with his dog. He drives a Mercedes G-wagon as well.
